Review date: October 29, 2026. An AVS failure means the billing address or postal code provided during payment did not match the information checked by the issuer or payment processor. It is different from a CVV failure or a 3-D Secure authentication failure, although several checks may occur in the same payment.
Common reasons
- The billing address does not match the issuer’s records.
- The postal code format is not accepted for the card or merchant region.
- A shipping address was entered instead of the billing address.
- The merchant or processor uses a stricter address check.
- The card, region or transaction type is not supported.
How to check the details
Use the billing address registered with the card issuer. Enter the postal code in the format requested by the merchant, and do not invent an address to bypass verification. Check the country, state or province, city and street fields for omissions or formatting errors.
Safe troubleshooting
- Review the merchant’s payment form and correct only inaccurate details.
- Confirm that the card is active and supports online or overseas payments.
- Complete any legitimate 3-D Secure verification step.
- Ask the merchant whether the decline was specifically an AVS mismatch.
- Contact the issuer if the registered billing address or postal format is unclear.
A successful AVS check does not guarantee approval because balance, limits, risk review and other authorization rules still apply. Do not repeatedly retry the same failed payment or share security codes with unofficial support.
