Review date: October 26, 2026. CVV, CVC and CSC are common names for a card security code. AVS checks billing address details, 3D Secure verifies the cardholder and the issuer makes the final authorization decision. These steps are related but not interchangeable: a correct CVV does not guarantee AVS, 3DS or final approval.
Common error messages
A merchant may show “Incorrect CVC,” “Invalid CVV,” “Security code incorrect” or “CVV mismatch.” Wording varies by merchant and payment processor and is not always a standardized issuer decline code.
What CVV, CVC and CSC mean
Most Visa and Mastercard cards use three digits near the signature panel. Some cards use four digits on the front. The security code is not the card PIN or an SMS verification code. Use the code shown on the physical card or in the issuer’s official app.
Common reasons for failure
- The wrong digits were entered from the card.
- Browser autofill inserted an old card’s code.
- A replacement card is being used with the previous code.
- A virtual card refreshed and its number or security code changed.
- The card is frozen, expired or not enabled for online or foreign payments.
- Repeated failures caused a temporary issuer or merchant block.
- The billing address or postal code also fails, while the page shows only a generic error.
Safe troubleshooting order
- Stop repeated retries and record the error and time.
- Clear old autofill data and enter the card details manually.
- Check the number, expiry, security code, cardholder name, billing address and postal code.
- Confirm whether the card was replaced, frozen or the virtual code refreshed.
- Check bank-app alerts and online or foreign-payment permissions.
- Ask the issuer whether an authorization request was received and why it was declined.
- After correcting the cause, retry once. If it still fails, use another payment method you are authorized to use.
Why can a correct security code still fail?
The checkout message may simplify a more complex decline. The transaction can fail because of insufficient funds, regional restrictions, an unusual device, an incomplete 3DS challenge, a billing-address mismatch or issuer risk controls. Re-entering the same code repeatedly will not solve those conditions.
Can a failed CVV check create a charge?
A failed security-code check usually does not create a completed purchase, but the issuer may briefly show a small authorization or pending amount. Pending does not mean the merchant has received the funds. Wait for the status to clarify before trying again so that multiple holds do not reduce the available balance.
Extra checks for virtual cards
Confirm that the card is active, the code has not rotated, the merchant accepts the card type, the transaction and daily limits are sufficient, and the currency and billing details are supported. Do not send the full card number, security code or verification code to a merchant chat or third party.
