Review date: September 1, 2026. A hotel card transaction marked pending, frozen or authorized does not necessarily mean the hotel has completed a charge. A hotel preauthorization temporarily reserves part of the card’s available credit or balance to confirm the card and provide payment security for room charges, deposits and incidental expenses.

Preauthorization versus a completed charge

Item Preauthorization Completed charge
Funds Temporarily reduces available credit or balance Settles and appears as a posted transaction
Bank status Pending, frozen or authorized Posted or completed
Amount May include an estimate for room charges and incidentals Usually the final settlement amount
Next step May be completed, partly completed or released A refund requires a separate process

Even when the room is prepaid, a hotel may authorize an incidental deposit at check-in for dining, parking, minibar or room service. Hotel policies may reserve an estimated amount at check-in and settle the final stay amount at checkout.

Why can the authorization exceed the room price?

The hotel may combine unpaid room charges, taxes, daily incidental allowances and a risk buffer. The amount depends on the room, number of nights, hotel policy, local taxes and card type. Before check-in, ask for the authorization amount, currency, whether it can be increased daily and how it will be released at checkout.

Credit cards and debit cards

A credit-card authorization normally uses part of the credit limit. A debit-card authorization may reduce the account’s immediately available balance. Even after release, the bank may need time to make the funds available again. For overseas stays, keep enough funds available and avoid placing the entire travel budget on one debit card.

What to confirm at check-in and checkout

  1. Confirm which card pays the room and which card secures incidentals.
  2. Record the authorization amount and currency.
  3. At checkout, compare the final bill and ask whether the old authorization was completed or released.
  4. If a posted charge and an unreleased authorization both appear, distinguish a duplicate charge from one pending authorization before disputing it.

Common questions

Does a preauthorization accrue interest?

A pending authorization is generally not a settled purchase, but it reduces available credit or balance. Ask the issuer about the account-specific treatment and interest rules.

Can a hotel charge any amount?

The hotel should settle according to the accommodation terms and actual spending. For an unfamiliar posted item, request an itemized bill from the hotel first, then follow the issuer’s dispute process if needed.
