Review date: October 29, 2026. If an overseas website or subscription platform shows “Refunded” but the card balance has not changed, the refund may still be moving through the merchant, processor, card network and issuer. Confirm the original transaction and refund status before asking for a trace.

Merchant refund versus bank posting

“Refunded” usually means the merchant submitted the instruction. The issuer still needs to process it. Bank, currency, weekend and holiday rules can affect the display time.

The usual refund path

  1. The merchant cancels the order and submits the refund.
  2. The processor accepts the request.
  3. The card network sends the refund information to the issuer.
  4. The issuer posts the credit to the original card account.

Distinguish three common states

  • Original transaction pending: The merchant may not have completed collection; the result may be release of an authorization rather than a separate refund.
  • Original posted, refund processing: The original charge is settled and a separate credit or refund record should appear later.
  • Original reversed: The transaction was reversed and available funds return without a line labelled refund.

Why refunds normally return to the original method

Card refunds normally return to the original payment method for reconciliation and fraud controls. If the card expired, was replaced or was closed, ask the issuer how it handles the credit; a merchant usually cannot simply redirect it to another card.

Check these details

  1. Confirm the account, order and original purchase channel.
  2. Record the merchant refund date, amount, currency and status.
  3. Check whether the original charge is pending, reversed or posted.
  4. Review available balance and statement details, not only notifications.
  5. Keep the refund email, receipt and a safe reference number.

Why might there be no separate refund entry?

If the original transaction never posted, cancellation may simply release the authorization. The pending entry can disappear and available balance can recover without a new refund line. On a credit card, a refund may reduce the statement balance rather than increase a deposit account.

Why can the amount differ?

Cross-currency payments and refunds can use different conversion dates and rates. Foreign-transaction, conversion or third-party fees may also be treated differently. Compare transaction and refund currencies before asking the issuer about fees.

Recommended enquiry order

  • Confirm submission in the merchant order or subscription page.
  • Check the refund email for date, amount, currency and order number.
  • Allow the normal processing window instead of requesting another refund the same day.
  • After the merchant’s expected time, request a refund trace or reference.
  • Give that reference to the issuer and ask it to locate the credit.

When contacting the merchant, provide the account email, order number, refund date, amount, currency, payment brand and last four digits. Never provide a password, full card number, CVC or verification code.
