Review date: September 1, 2026. English adaptation reviewed October 29, 2026. There is no universal release time for a hotel preauthorization. Even after checkout and a hotel’s release or completion, the issuer may need time to update available credit or balance. Some hotel guidance uses about 72 hours as a reference, but issuer, card, country and currency can make the period longer.
Steps in the release process
- Checkout: The hotel confirms room, tax and incidental charges.
- Merchant processing: The original authorization is completed for the final amount or released.
- Acquirer and network transmission: The update travels to the issuer.
- Issuer update: The hold is removed and available funds or credit are restored.
Until every step is complete, the bank app may continue to show Pending. A hotel’s stated release time is a reference, not a universal promise for every card.
Typical situations
| Situation | What you may see | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Hotel releases promptly | Funds return within hours or several business days | Monitor the pending record |
| Final charge is completed | Posted charge appears and the old hold later disappears | Distinguish pending from posted |
| Cross-border or debit card | Release may take longer | Ask the issuer for the maximum hold period |
| Hotel has not submitted release | Hold remains | Ask for the processing date and reference |
If the hold remains beyond the expected time
- Keep the checkout bill, order number and stay dates.
- Ask the hotel to confirm the original amount, currency and release or completion date in writing.
- Tell the issuer that this is a hotel authorization hold, not an ordinary refund.
- Ask whether the authorization remains valid and when it will expire automatically.
- If two posted charges exist, investigate them as a duplicate-charge issue.
Release is not the same as a refund
Releasing an authorization normally restores occupied credit or balance without creating a refund entry. A refund is more relevant when the hotel completed a charge and later returned the funds. Tell the bank whether the record is an authorization hold or a posted charge.
