Review date: July 28, 2026. English adaptation reviewed October 29, 2026. A card or payment app showing Pending, processing or authorized does not necessarily mean the merchant completed the charge. It is often an authorization hold: the issuer temporarily reserves available credit or balance while the merchant completes settlement or the authorization expires.

What the main statuses mean

  1. Authorization: The merchant asks the issuer to check the card, balance, limit and risk rules.
  2. Pending: The amount may reduce available funds but is not yet a final posted transaction.
  3. Completed: The merchant submits settlement and the charge posts.
  4. Released: If the transaction is not completed, the issuer restores the available amount after the authorization expires.

How long can Pending remain?

There is no universal period for every bank and merchant. Public service examples may show authorization holds lasting several business days or longer, depending on the issuer. Treat such ranges as illustrations, not a replacement for your bank’s stated policy.

Why can two identical Pending amounts appear?

Each payment attempt can create a separate authorization. Repeated retries, a new authorization before the old one expires or duplicate subscription submissions can temporarily show multiple holds. Uncompleted authorizations often release without becoming completed charges.

What to do when the subscription is not active

  1. Check the merchant account or order status, not only the bank statement.
  2. Record the order number, payment time, amount, currency and a redacted screenshot.
  3. Wait for the merchant status to settle and avoid repeated retries.
  4. If the merchant confirms failure, ask the issuer for the expected release timing.
  5. If the bank shows a completed charge but the service is not active, contact merchant support with the transaction record.

When to act immediately

  • You do not recognize the transaction or suspect card details were exposed.
  • The amount becomes completed but there is no matching merchant order.
  • The hold remains beyond the period provided by the issuer.
  • Several transactions have posted as completed rather than remaining Pending.

For an unauthorized transaction, lock the card and contact the issuer immediately. Dispute procedures commonly apply to posted transactions, while Pending handling depends on the issuer.
