Review date: October 29, 2026. “Do Not Honor” is a generic decline message. It usually means the issuer or payment network did not approve the transaction, but the message alone does not identify the exact cause.

Common causes

  • Insufficient available balance or a card limit.
  • Online, overseas or recurring payments are disabled.
  • Billing information, card status or verification does not match.
  • The merchant, currency or transaction type is restricted.
  • The issuer’s risk system requires additional review.

What to check first

Confirm the merchant name, amount, currency and payment status. Check the card’s available balance, daily limits, online and overseas settings, expiry date and billing address. If 3-D Secure or another verification step appears, complete it through the legitimate merchant page.

Cross-border checks before retrying

For an overseas online payment, confirm foreign online, card-not-present and recurring-payment permissions, then match the billing name, address and postal code to the issuer’s records. Also check whether the merchant category, currency or region is restricted.

How to troubleshoot safely

  1. Wait for the final status if the transaction is still pending.
  2. Correct billing or account details without inventing an address or identity.
  3. Ask the merchant whether the payment was blocked or captured.
  4. Contact the card issuer and provide the time, amount, merchant and error message.
  5. Retry only after the cause is addressed, and stop if the same decline repeats.

Do not repeatedly submit the same payment, rapidly switch regions or share card security codes with unofficial support. A different card may produce a different result, but no card is universally guaranteed to work.
