Review date: October 29, 2026. A failed payment should not be retried repeatedly without checking its status. The right waiting time depends on whether the transaction is pending, declined, reversed or blocked by the merchant or issuer.

First identify the payment status

A pending authorization may later complete, expire or release. A declined payment normally requires a cause check before another attempt. A reversed or refunded transaction should not be submitted again until the original record is clear.

Checks before retrying

  • Confirm the merchant has not already received or captured the payment.
  • Check available balance, card limits, online and overseas-payment settings.
  • Review billing address, postal code, CVV and 3-D Secure authentication.
  • Check for an unpaid balance, account restriction or verification request.
  • Confirm the card and currency are supported for the merchant.

How long should you wait?

For a clear issuer decline, correct the cause first and retry once when the merchant account is ready. For a pending authorization, wait until the merchant or issuer shows a final status instead of creating duplicate attempts. For a risk or verification block, complete the requested review or contact support before trying again.

Safer retry habits

Use accurate account and billing information, avoid rapidly switching cards or regions, and keep the original error message and transaction time. If the same payment fails again, stop retrying and ask the merchant or issuer for the decline reason and next step.
