Review date: October 29, 2026. ChatGPT Plus upgrades and renewals can fail even when a card has enough funds. Common causes include issuer restrictions, unsupported recurring payments, incorrect card or billing details, 3D Secure problems, browser issues, region support and temporary payment-channel errors.
1. The issuer declined the card
The bank may reject an international online, recurring or unusual transaction. Check the bank app for a decline or verification prompt, ask the issuer whether the transaction was blocked, confirm foreign online and recurring-payment permissions, complete required verification and use another supported method only when appropriate.
2. The card does not support subscriptions
A card that works for ordinary purchases may not support monthly subscription billing. Confirm international online payments and recurring charges, and check whether a virtual card supports subscription merchants. Avoid repeatedly trying unknown cards because this can create additional risk checks.
3. Card or billing details are wrong
Check the card number, expiry, CVC, cardholder name, billing address, country and postal code. Use the billing details associated with the card and a consistent address format.
4. Balance or authorization is insufficient
A subscription can involve a small verification or authorization in addition to the plan amount. Keep a buffer above the displayed price and check the single-transaction limit before renewal. Plus billing and API usage are separate; taxes and regional pricing can affect the final amount.
5. 3D Secure or bank verification fails
Some issuers require an SMS code, bank-app approval or another challenge. Confirm the registered phone number, allow the official challenge page to load, avoid repeated submissions and ask the issuer whether 3DS is enabled for the transaction.
6. Browser or checkout problems
Restart from the official ChatGPT checkout, check the account email and avoid stale autofill data. Use a supported browser and stable network. Do not change regions or billing information simply to bypass an error.
If the bank shows a charge but Plus is not active
- Check whether the transaction is pending or posted.
- Confirm the account email and purchase channel.
- Keep the order or receipt details and avoid an immediate second purchase.
- Contact the relevant official support route if the posted charge is not matched to service access.
Duplicate-charge and refund checks
Before calling a charge duplicate, compare the timestamps, amounts, currencies and merchant descriptors. One item may be a pending authorization while another is a posted charge. Keep the receipt, order email and bank status, and do not repeatedly retry or request the same refund. Follow the purchase channel’s official refund process and ask the issuer to trace a posted refund using its reference.
Safe retry order
- Record the error, time, amount and currency.
- Check issuer permissions, card details and billing address.
- Complete one official verification flow.
- Retry once after the cause is corrected.
- Stop if it fails again and ask the issuer for a specific reason.
